[Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis].
We read with interest the report by White and Moore-Gillon on the resource implications of multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) in the UK. We studied the outcome of 44 HIV negative patients with MDR-TB admitted to two tertiary care tuberculosis units in the Netherlands between 1985 and 1998. 3 Most (38 patients) had pulmonary tuberculosis. The mean admission period was 164 days and all pati...
متن کاملLaboratory diagnosis of tuberculosis in resource-poor countries: challenges and opportunities.
With an estimated 9.4 million new cases globally, tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a major public health concern. Eighty percent of all cases worldwide occur in 22 high-burden, mainly resource-poor settings. This devastating impact of tuberculosis on vulnerable populations is also driven by its deadly synergy with HIV. Therefore, building capacity and enhancing universal access to rapid and ac...
متن کاملUpdate on the diagnosis and management of tuberculous meningitis in children.
Tuberculous meningitis (TBM), the most devastating manifestation of tuberculosis, is often missed or overlooked because of nonspecific symptoms and difficulties in diagnosis. It continues to be an important cause of neurologic handicap in resource-poor countries. Owing to the suboptimal performance of diagnostic tests of TBM, diagnosis relies on thorough history, clinical examination, and relev...
متن کاملManagement of the child with cough or difficult breathing.
Childhood respiratory disease creates considerable morbidity and mortality, especially amongst children living in low-income countries. Of the more than 10 million children who die annually from preventable diseases, pneumonia is responsible for 18.1%, while in low-income countries this percentage rises to 26%. It is calculated that 90% of these deaths from preventable diseases occur in 42 coun...
متن کاملMulti-drug resistant tuberculosis burden and risk factors: an update.
Multi-drug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis is defined as disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis with resistance to at least two anti-tubercular drugs Isoniazid and Rifampicin. Recent surveillance data have revealed that prevalence of the drug resistant tuberculosis has risen to the highest rate ever recorded in the history. Drug resistant tuberculosis generally arises through the selection o...
متن کاملImplementation validation performed in Rwanda to determine whether the INNO-LiPA Rif.TB line probe assay can be used for detection of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis in low-resource countries.
We validated the implementation of the INNO-LiPA Rif.TB line probe assay, a diagnostic test for rapid detection of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), in Rwanda. No substantial difference was found between results obtained in Rwanda and results obtained in Belgium with the same samples. This rapid diagnostic test for MDR-TB can therefore be reliably implemented in a resource-poor setting.
